Schools in Haiti
Human values education has been adopted as part of the ESSE outreach programme in three schools, located in very poor neighborhoods in the capital Port-au-Prince, which are providing free kindergarten and primary education, serving a total of 550 children. In addition, a school in the mountains south of Port-au-Prince, Kindergarten through 9th grade, has adopted human values education, serving approximately 350 children.
These schools in Port-au-Prince are the first schools in Haiti to use the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values programme with the teachers and students. The SSSIO and ESSE institute have provided training in human values since the great earthquake in 2010. Over a 10-year period, 180 youth and teachers have followed one or more trainings in Sathya Sai Education in Human Values.
Direct supervision of the schools and SSEHV programmes is happening as trainers have contact on a regular basis and on-going support and guidance is possible. In order to provide free education, which is quite exceptional in Haiti, the schools need support for rental of the buildings, very modest salaries and school supplies.
The Sri Sathya Sai Charitable Trust UK has been instrumental in providing funds for the rental of the ABC for Life school building in 2018 and 2020, as well as funds for the special Christmas events, a computer and photocopy machine, sports equipment and the year long Saturday Values Club activities and summer camp. This will support these children to overcome great obstacles inherent in being born in an environment of dire poverty.
